Wine, entrepreneurship and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

Booze and Kingman—a perfect marriage
Last weekend I visited lovely Kingman and was surprised (shocked!) to discover Kingman has not only a wine and food festival but TWO wineries: Stetson and Cella. Stetson’s chardonnay is to die for; the Red Lady merlot ain’t too shabby, neither. Happy as I was to see someone actually coming up with some industry in Kingman, to me it begs the question: do you go where the opportunities are or do you make opportunities where you are? I hope the wineries and the Desert Diamond Distillery (you can get their spirits at the Monte V! I know what I’m doing this weekend) make it, I really really really do. I salute them for their efforts.
Being an adult: It sucks
At the same time, I’m too risk-averse to do something like open a winery in the Land of the Meth Addicts. I obviously ran screaming away to Flagstaff as soon as I could, because the opportunities are better here. I tried to be a little entrepreneurial with Keep Flag Happy; even though it didn’t work out for me, I learned that having your own business is not something I could really do as a sideline. I needed to go all in to make it work and I need health insurance and a 401(k) more. I never want to be someone who signs away their life for a comfy abode (unless it’s my chateau) and a car payment, but I have long suspected I’m more square than hip.
Getting my money’s worth from my psych degree, one blog post at a time
My B.S. in psych hasn’t served me too well, but here I have a chance to bust out with some hard-earned knowledge: Maslow’s hierarchy. My health insurance/401(k) needs (safety and security) logically take precedence over my artistic expression needs, but I do sometimes wonder if I’ve got it the wrong way around.
