The urge to create
By jesslawless on June 18, 2013, in BlogSometimes it’s an almost physical urge to get up, get out, do something. Today I have thought about creating:
- A painting (I can’t paint)
- Clothes (I can’t sew)
- A contact lens that can correct for astigmatism without making me want to scratch my eyeball out
- Jewelry (metalsmithing is totally something you could pick up in like a weekend, right?)
- A scrapbook for a fabulous vacation I haven’t taken yet
It always hits me in the summer. That excited summer vacation feeling that says there are places to go and people to see and craft projects to be completed! Let’s go. That’s what makes working in an office in the summer so cruel. You see the blue sky and the adventures you could be having… juuuuuust out of reach.
The urge to create is one of my favorite feelings. The sense that’s there’s something really wonderful just about to burst out of me is akin to a Negra Modelo with lime on a hot day; it’s just the exact opposite of the sludgy feeling of being blocked.
Sometimes, the urge to create can be a little inconvenient, if there’s no outlet. But I had a freelance story to write and lo, it’s much easier to do work when you’re inspired than when you aren’t! (I find I have a lot of these groundbreaking thoughts). Now if I could only figure out how to harness creativity when I need it instead of spending hours on Pinterest looking at DIY projects I’ll never do…
